The territorial management plan for Verano Brianza addresses a very particular territory generated by the intense urbanization of central Brianza. The territory appears to present the typical problems of this joined context, as traffic, disused industrial structures and underestimation of historical centre, but at the same time it’s endowed with unexpected environmental value along the valley of Lambro river and with residential settlement and industrial areas that bear eloquent witness to its long process of urbanization. Through investigation of territory, interpretation of the underlying dynamics and observation of the inhabitants’ quality of life, the plan is developed as a hybrid instrument made up of different actions in different phases.

A master plan is used to anticipate (through the tool of the integrated programme of intervention) the vision, rules and benefits of the transformation of some disused structures, then incorporating into the plan the design and the benefits to be obtained by the town as a whole in terms of standards and works. Maps of policies and actions are created for the districts into which the territory is divided, mixing micro-operations on existing fabrics with trasformations on areas ripe for redevelopment for everyday use.

Each of these aspects is strongly informed by design, expressesing the pursuit of quality for a hybrid, in-between territory not inclined to see public space as a great resource for the overall quality of the living. The plan design thus expresses a structure, while at the same time govern the dynamics and policies required for its attainment.
